Time, trust, and total transparency: New People Pulse findings reveal what modern travelers really want.

While the song of the summer is yet to be determined, the summer travel season has been in full swing.

In the latest *People Pulse, we surveyed over 150 consumers to understand how they’re feeling, spending and planning for their summer trips.

What we found was that consumers are eager to travel, but, in an era of viral travel disruptions and increasing costs, every vacation now comes with higher expectations.

Keep reading for a closer look at how consumers are spending their summer travels and what brands can do to earn a plan on the itinerary.

Travel plans remain steady amid higher prices.

Despite record high gas prices due to global conflicts and airline fares that surged 26.7% compared to last year, summer travel plans persisted.

The vast majority (95%) of respondents said they were somewhat to very likely to travel this summer. And they said they’d be staying state-side with almost half (43%) of respondents taking a domestic vacation and 30% taking a road trip. Meanwhile, only a fraction of respondents (6%) had international vacation plans, reinforcing a desire to stay closer to home.

A vacation that’s worth it means no surprises.

With travel costs increasing dramatically, financial control is a requirement for consumers. The math needs to math and hidden fees and fine print details are a no go. In fact, 63% of respondents said that transparent pricing makes a travel experience feel like it’s “worth it.”

  • “I hate feeling nickel and dimed, so I really appreciate when a company lists the price and all it includes from the get go. Even if the price is high, at least I know the exact amount I’m spending.”
  • “Transparent pricing because I hate hidden prices.”

Travel decisions are built on trust, not trends.

Only 8% of respondents said influencers or social media shape their travel plans. In comparison, nearly half (46%) said family and friends do. Consumers may discover destinations online, but when it’s time to book, they still trust people over platforms. And interestingly, only 9% of respondents said loyalty programs influence their travel decisions, reinforcing their loyalty lies with their trusted sources not brands.

Time is the real barrier.

Asked about the biggest non-financial roadblock to travel, the majority of respondents pointed to their most precious asset: time. Respondents described the challenge less as a lack of desire and more as a lack of opportunity, such as finding enough PTO or syncing schedules with family and friends.

  • “The biggest roadblocks to traveling are finding time to travel. My job and our lives are very busy, so it does not come easily for us to be able to take off and go for trips.”
  • “Time off from work or your job is the biggest roadblock to traveling being able to take enough time off work”

For today’s traveler, personal travel has now become a high-stakes use of a very limited resource: days-off. Every day off carries more weight than it once did, making the consequences of a bad travel experience feel even bigger.

Needing a vacation from planning a vacation.

The first obstacle is finding the time for vacation but the second obstacle is actually making the time worth it and organizing all the details: packing lists, pet sitters, transportation and lodging research etc. It’s a real mental load for people, turning what should be an escape into another project to manage.

  • “Trips are a lot to plan, pack, coordinate. Lining up a petsitter, making lists… It’s work.”
  • “Definitely the planning process altogether. It can be arduous and overwhelming when it comes to logistics like airfare, hotels, and transportation”
  • “I would say the difficulty of figuring everything out and having the logistics down pack because everything needs to be planned and it’s tough to get all the information”

So, what does this mean for brands?

Reduce uncertainty at every stage: Transparent pricing, clear policies, and predictable experiences are more valuable than flashy perks.

Put real reviews on display: Personal recommendations are trusted more than influencers so highlighting experiences people genuinely recommend will carry the most impact.

Lighten the planning load: Tap into AI tools and explore how they can help make the planning process easier and maybe even more fun.

Safe travels and bon voyage!
