Macy’s finds the magic before the celebration.
The Stakes
Video — Macy’s | The Moment Before Film
Macy’s was entering one of the biggest years in its history, with the 50th Fourth of July Fireworks show in New York and the 100th Thanksgiving Day Parade on the horizon. But while these were historic milestones, Macy’s needed to be seen as a store of the now, not of the past.
The Unruly Idea
Instead of marketing the celebration itself, Macy’s claimed the moment before it. The campaign centered on anticipation, capturing the emotional buildup that leads to life’s biggest moments: the nerves before prom, the buzz before guests arrive, the energy before fireworks light the sky. The launch film “The Moment Before” built tension through a series of almost-reveals: prom dresses that never fully appear, a parade balloon just out of frame, fireworks seconds before ignition. The spot debuted during the Grammys and ran throughout the Winter Olympics and major entertainment broadcasts, kicking off Macy’s year of celebration while reframing the brand’s role in modern culture.
The Uncontained Impact
- Drove measurable gains in attention, buzz, and word of mouth following launch
- Outperformed key competitors across brand momentum metrics during the campaign window
